North Wales is perhaps best known for Snowdon, Wales's highest mountain and surrounding peaks such as Cader Idris. The Snowdonia range has long been an attraction for walkers and climbers but those with less energy can still enjoy the panoramic views from the top of Snowdon by travelling up on the mountain railway.
Visitors interested in water sports should head for resorts such as Abersoch on the Llyn peninsula. Safe bathing beaches and family entertainment can be found along the sandy north coast at resorts such as Rhyl, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.
History and heritage lovers will find a plethora of fine medieval castles and forts stretching along the A55 expressway and down to the Llyn peninsula. The best known include Conwy, Beaumaris, Caernarfon and Harlech but there are many smaller castles scattered around. Some have been repaired and rebuilt and offer accommodation or function rooms. It is worth crossing the Britannia Bridge to the Isle of Anglesey to visit the many historic sites there too.
The region offers many attractions to keep visitors entertained such as the Welsh Mountain Zoo and Bodnant Gardens, both in Colwyn Bay, the Anglesey Sea Zoo and Marine Centre, the Techniquest hands-on science centre in Wrexham and the fantasy Italianate village of Portmeirion.
There is plenty of accommodation available in the region, ranging from traditional hotels and guesthouses to castles or caravan parks. Whether you want a budget family holiday, a full-on activity break or a luxury weekend of pampering and indulgence, you will find something suitable in North Wales.
